It’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month

posted on

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recognizes October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month. DHS established this month in cooperation with the National Cyber Security Alliance and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center. Because most of us are so reliant on the Internet on a daily basis, it’s important to understand that we are responsible for keeping ourselves safe while using it.

Here are some tips from DHS to keep in mind to stay safe while using the Internet:
• Set strong passwords and don’t share them with anyone.
• Keep your operating system, browser, and other critical software optimized by installing updates.
• Maintain an open dialogue with your family, friends, and community about Internet safety.
• Limit the amount of personal information you post online and use privacy settings to avoid sharing information widely.
• Be cautious about what you receive or read online—if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

AWWA has some helpful guidance available on cybersecurity too.
