China home to world’s largest river diversion project

posted on
This month, the middle portion of China’s South to North Water Project, opened up. This project focuses on moving water from the south of that country, where it abundantly flows, to the north part, where a large amount of people are at.

As reported in Bloomberg Businessweek and according to the Chinese newspaper Global Times, the portion of this project that opened this month is “a series of canals stretching 890 miles across northeastern China that will annually transport an estimated 9.5 billion cubic meters of water from central China to major cities on the north China plain”. That is a lot of water!

Scientists worry about the impacts that changing the river may have since what consequences may occur may not be known for many years. However, the successful completion of the middle portion of this project is great news for many in China who live in the drier regions.
