Here’s an interesting way to start the new year. Concord, a town in Massachusetts near Boston, just put a ban on disposable plastic water bottles. According to Time, Concord is “becoming the first municipality in the nation to ban the sale of single-serving water bottles smaller than 1 liter.” The ban would be halted during emergencies however.
So why exactly did this ban even start? As is being reported, Jean Hill, a local resident who spearheaded the campaign, and others hope the ban will reduce waste and cut fossil fuel use. Needless to say, local business owners are frustrated by this ban, as they believe that customers should have the freedom to make the choice to buy bottled water or not.
San Francisco is also tossing around the idea of banning the sale of bottled water too, according to news reports.
We are interested to see how this issue develops in the above mentioned cities and to see if other cities across the nation will grab hold of this trend.
