In Tempe, Arizona, local residents can bring in donated water to the library to get their fines reduced.
According to the local paper, The Republic, for each bottle of water that is donated, $1 is knocked off fines. Or if a case of water is brought in, an entire fine can be wiped out. The donated water is given to local charities to be distributed.
According to The Republic, “The program was launched three years ago as a way for families who face tough economic times to have their fines lifted so that they can gain access (to) Tempe Public Library resources again.”
So far the library’s “Water for Fines” program has brought in over 700 cases of water which has led to $13,000 worth of fines being waived.
