Research findings recently published in Science Advances suggest much of Earth’s water may have come from comets in space.

A U.S. space mission that launched Dec. 15 will map the Earth’s water and collect data to help manage climate change. The mission will “conduct a comprehensive survey of the world’s oceans, lakes and rivers for the first time.”

NASA's new study revealed that water, which once entirely covered Mars, has never left the planet's atmosphere but rather taken a different form.
