Water reuse at the Olympics

posted on
With the Winter Olympics going on right now in Sochi, we wanted to fit in a little water related information surrounding that topic.

Most of us probably don’t give much thought to what happens to wastewater, but it can be put to good use. According to Castagra, an oil and gas and wastewater industries protective coatings company, during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, wastewater was used to heat 70% of the high-rise buildings in the Olympic Village area. It is noted that this act reduced greenhouse emissions by 65%. Then during the 2012 London Summer Olympics, wastewater was recycled to irrigate landscaping in the Olympic Park and Village areas and also provided cooling for buildings.

We are pleased to see that these water recycling systems are in action. They serve as great examples of the ways water can be reused efficiently.
